Overview

This is a model family overview. For version-specific details, see the individual model entries linked below.

Sora is OpenAI’s video generation family for text-to-video and image-to-video creation. It now needs to be treated as a sunset lane, not a fresh adoption default: OpenAI says the standalone Sora app/web experience was discontinued on April 26, 2026, and the Sora API is scheduled for discontinuation on September 24, 2026.

Current Lineup

At this snapshot date, OpenAI developer documentation still references Sora 2 as the base API tier and Sora 2 Pro as the higher-fidelity tier. Because of the announced API sunset, those pages are best used for migration, comparison, and short remaining compatibility windows.

Strengths

  • Strong historical ecosystem continuity for teams already using OpenAI APIs.
  • High-value fit for migration comparisons against newer video lanes.
  • Useful reference point for multi-step workflows that combine text reasoning, image generation, and video output.
  • Clear API pricing documentation while the sunset window remains open.

When to Choose Sora

Choose Sora only for existing workflows, short-term compatibility work, or migration comparisons. New video-generation workflows should evaluate active routes such as Veo, Runway, or other current provider lanes rather than starting on a scheduled-discontinuation API.
