GPT Image is OpenAI’s image-native model family for text-to-image and edit-driven visual workflows. It is designed for teams building image features directly into products, automation pipelines, and creative tooling rather than relying only on standalone design apps. The April 2026 update adds GPT Image 2, the model behind ChatGPT Images 2.0, as the current state-of-the-art family route.

Current Lineup

At this snapshot date, the family includes GPT Image 2 as the current ChatGPT Images 2.0 and API route, GPT Image 1.5 as a still-current earlier premium API tier, gpt-image-1-mini as the lighter-cost generation route, and GPT-Image-1 as the earlier API image model still useful for historical comparison and compatibility checks.

When to Choose GPT Image

Choose GPT Image when you need programmable image generation with predictable operational controls, edit workflows, and integration into existing app backends. GPT Image 2 is the route to evaluate first for new high-quality image work; GPT Image 1.5 remains useful for compatibility with existing implementations, while the mini tier is more appropriate for high-volume experimentation and product features where price sensitivity is real.
