Overview

Freshness note: Model capabilities, limits, and pricing can change quickly. This profile is a point-in-time snapshot last verified on June 8, 2026.

GPT-5.4 Pro is OpenAI’s premium compute-heavy GPT-5.4 option from the March 5 GPT-5.4 launch. OpenAI positioned it for work where answer quality, reliability, and longer agent execution matter more than latency or spend efficiency. As of June 8, 2026, GPT-5.5 Pro is the newer premium route across eligible ChatGPT, Codex, and API workflows, while GPT-5.4 Pro remains relevant for existing integrations and compatibility planning.

Capabilities

This tier is meant for hard synthesis, decision memos, high-stakes reviews, difficult engineering tasks, and escalation-stage agent work where iterative cleanup is expensive. It is not a sensible always-on default. It is the model you route to when the cost of a weak first pass is greater than the cost of a premium inference path.

Technical Details

OpenAI’s current model docs list GPT-5.4 Pro with a 1,050,000-token context window, 128,000-token maximum output, text and image input, and text output. The same docs say GPT-5.4 Pro is available in the Responses API only, supports reasoning.effort values of medium, high, and xhigh, and can take several minutes on difficult requests, so background mode is the safer integration pattern.

The Pro tool surface is narrower than regular GPT-5.4. Current docs list streaming, function calling, web search, file search, image generation, apply patch, computer use, MCP, and tool search support, but not structured outputs, fine-tuning, code interpreter, hosted shell, or skills.

The practical difference versus regular GPT-5.4 is not just a small quality bump. Pro is for situations where better first-pass judgment, longer reasoning chains, and reduced reviewer cleanup justify a large premium.

Pricing & Access

Published API pricing (per 1M tokens):

  • Input: $30.00
  • Output: $180.00

OpenAI also says prompts above 272K input tokens are priced at 2x input and 1.5x output for the full session for GPT-5.4 and GPT-5.4 Pro, and that regional-processing endpoints carry a 10% uplift. This is an escalation-tier pricing band. Teams choosing a premium OpenAI escalation route should now compare it against the API-listed GPT-5.5 Pro path.

Best Use Cases

Use GPT-5.4 Pro selectively for executive-ready memos, difficult architecture reviews, risk-heavy technical analysis, and long multi-step workflows where stronger reasoning quality can justify a very large cost premium and an existing GPT-5.4 Pro integration is already the right operational fit. It is best used as a second-stage escalation route after a cheaper model has already narrowed the problem.

Comparisons

  • GPT-5.5 Pro (OpenAI): Newer premium route across eligible ChatGPT, Codex, and API workflows.
  • GPT-5.4 (OpenAI): Better general premium default for most hard tasks.
  • GPT-5.3-Codex (OpenAI): Better cost/performance for repository-heavy coding workflows.
  • Claude Opus 4.6 (Anthropic): Another premium model choice for teams comparing top-end quality across vendors.
