GLM
FamilyZhipu AI · GLM
Z.ai's GLM family spans open and hosted models for Chinese-first reasoning, coding, and autonomous agent workflows.
Overview
This is a model family overview. For version-specific details, see the individual model entries linked below.
GLM is Z.ai’s (formerly Zhipu AI’s) flagship model family and one of the core Chinese ecosystems for production language model use. The lineup blends hosted frontier tiers with open-weight releases, which gives teams flexibility across API-first and self-managed deployment strategies.
Current Latest
GLM-5.1 is the current GLM reference point, released as a Z.ai API endpoint on March 27, 2026 and as open-weight on April 7, 2026. It is a post-training upgrade to the February 11, 2026 GLM-5 base, sharing the 744B-parameter Mixture-of-Experts architecture but substantially improving autonomous coding, tool use, and long-running execution behavior. Both the hosted API and the open-weight Hugging Face release ship under MIT licensing.
Strengths
- Strong Chinese and bilingual reasoning quality for enterprise and consumer assistants.
- Good coding and tool-use behavior in multi-step workflows.
- Flexible mix of API and open-weight deployment paths.
- Competitive cost-performance in many long-context use cases.
- Rapid iteration cadence with clear upgrade paths.
When to Choose GLM
Choose GLM when Chinese-language performance is a top requirement and you want optionality between managed APIs and open deployment. It is especially useful for bilingual assistant products, coding copilots, and internal analysis systems where regional quality and cost both matter.
