Overview

This is a model family overview. For version-specific details, see the individual model entries linked below.

Gemini Pro is the high-capability tier in Google’s Gemini family. It is designed for complex reasoning, professional coding, and tasks that benefit from very large context windows. The family currently spans a stable production lane and a newer preview lane, which is the cleanest way to describe it without overfitting to Google’s fast-moving app and plan copy.

Current Latest

Gemini 2.5 Pro is still the current stable production reference. Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview is the newer preview-tier path for teams willing to accept preview-model risk. Google’s May 2026 API docs now place the Gemini 3 family prominently above the 2.5 family, but that does not change the repo’s stable-versus-preview split for production guidance.

Strengths

  • 1M-token context window for processing large codebases or document sets
  • Native multimodal understanding — text, images, audio, and video natively
  • Strong coding performance, especially for codebase-wide analysis
  • Deep integration with Google Cloud, Vertex AI, and Google Workspace
  • Competitive pricing for the capability level

When to Choose Gemini Pro

  • Tasks requiring very long context windows
  • Multimodal workflows involving images, audio, or video alongside text
  • Google Cloud-native applications and workflows
  • Research and analysis tasks benefiting from broad knowledge
  • Production workloads on Google Vertex AI, especially if you want the stable 2.5 Pro lane rather than the newest preview path
